Paw District Library

Question to Nikki Isakson, Library Director:
How did you come to be involved with the library, did you have any prior library
A. I have always loved libraries and worked in the library at the high school
I attended. I also worked in the University of Minnesota library system for
a number of years. When my husband retired, it took me two weeks to realize
we couldn’t both be in the same place 24 hours a day, so when a position
opened up at the library in the small village close to us I applied and was
hired. Two years later the Director walked out and I was Interim Director and
then hired as Director. While I do not have an MLS, I am very experienced in
business management. As far as I’m concerned, that’s what a good
part of what a Library Director does, manage the business aspects of the library.
Q. Why do you love being a librarian?
A. I suppose it’s the same with most librarians ... I just love books.
I also love helping people find books they will love.
Q. Who is your favorite author? If there was one book you could recommend to
people, what would it be?
A. I don’t actually have a favorite, more a group of favorites. I love
Kim Harrison, Louise Penney & Craig Johnson’s Walt Longmire series.
Also, Jim Butcher and the J.D.Robb books.
Q. Tell us about your library.
A. The village only has 870 people. 513 have library cards. Two staff.
We are open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 10AM – 6PM, Thursday, 10AM – 7PM,
Saturday 9AM - Noon
After being housed in assorted church basements and a mercantile store for
many years, in 1968 we received an endowment for $250,000 to establish a library.
The village (using volunteer labor) built a community building which housed
the village offices, civic organizations and the library. We were a village
library at that time, but now we are a District Library. We receive no funding
from the village.
Q. How does the library impact your community?
A. We are a very small rural community with not much in the way of entertainment.
Without the library there would pretty much be nothing. In 2014, I applied
for and received a “Live & Learn Construction Grant” from the
State of Illinois which allowed us to completely remodel the library. It made
a huge difference. We were still using the original carpet from 1972! Everything
is new: floor plan, floors, walls, ceilings, lights, electrical, circulation
desk, my office. We even have two storage closets!! The remodel has greatly
increased the traffic in the library.
Q. Do you have a favorite story of something that happened at your library?
A. I had a lovely, elderly lady who came to the library often. One day she
walked in with a younger version of herself who I knew had to be her daughter.
They just stopped in front of the Circulation Desk and looked at me. I walked
into the stacks, picked up two books, checked them out, and handed them to
her. She turned to her daughter and said, “See, I told you. I don’t
even have to tell her what I want. She just goes and gets exactly what I need
and they’re always perfect!”
Q. What are your goals for your library, and how does ResourceMate® help
you meet your goals?
A. We are always looking for ways to ‘modernize’ the library.
That’s why my first order of business when I took over the library was
to automate. Without ResourceMate that could never have happened. We just didn’t
have the funds.
Q. What factors made you decide to purchase ResourceMate®?
A. Economics and your helpful staff.
Q. What are some of your favorite features of ResourceMate®?
A. I love the way you are constantly updating everything and making it easier
to use. I started with the original version and the ResourceMate® I am
using now is so far beyond that it is unbelievable. I have to say though, that
my FAVORITE part of ResourceMate® is your customer service.
