3.0 ISBN Retrieval
/ Import from Internet Information
You can find
the "Import from Internet" button by going into
ResourceMate®, clicking on the File menu,
then on Items, then clicking on the Library
Card Information screen tab.

The purpose
of this button is to use data found on the internet to
help you enter items quicker. This feature is currently
setup for the search results from the free Library of
Congress (LOC) Z39.50 web site. We have found using the
LOC Advanced search screen and searching by ISBN number
to be the quickest and most reliable way of finding items.
In your web
browser, move to the Library of Congress search screen
- http://www.loc.gov/z3950
- then choose Simple Search or Advanced
Search. We recommend using the Advanced Search
by ISBN for the quickest results. Make sure Record
Display is set to Full. Search for the item
you are currently cataloguing. When the LOC search has
found the desired item, click and hold your mouse and
drag it down and to the right to highlight all of the
text containing the bibliographic information for the
item.
Press
[CTRL] and [C] to copy this information
to the Windows™ clipboard. (Or click on Edit in
your browser and choose Copy).
Move back into
ResourceMate® and make sure you are in the Item
entry screen found on the File menu. Click on Add
a New Item, click on Continue and then click
on Import from Internet. The information will be
parsed into the proper ResourceMate® fields. You may make
changes to this information. When you are finished, press
the Continue button.

This will return
you to the Item entry screen and the ResourceMate®
fields will be filled with the imported information; even
subject keywords will be have been added automatically
to the Subjects tab! If you are satisfied with the results
you may press Save Changes. Otherwise you can add
more information and then press Save Changes.
(The Home page
for the Library of Congress is http://www.loc.gov.)
Any libraries
that give the search results in the same format can be
imported into ResourceMate® using this button. From the
Library of Congress web site you can access a number of
libraries available in this similar format. Point your
browser to http://www.loc.gov/z3950
and look for Search Other Catalogs.
"But we don't have internet access on the ResourceMate®
computer...we have it on another computer"
If you want
to use the Import from Internet feature but do
not have internet access on the ResourceMate® computer,
you may use your internet connection on another computer
to accumulate a file of search screen results. This works
for both the Regular and the Plus version of ResourceMate®.
Click
here to learn how.
Tip!
You can
assemble of team of volunteers who can use this method
to greatly speed up the creation of your library database.
They don't even need ResourceMate® installed on their
computers. Simply give them a list of items to be
catalogued (or an actual box of items) then have them
search for and copy those items, one at a time, from the
Library of Congress web site into a giant text file (as
described above). They can store the resulting text
file on a floppy disk from which you can finish the importing
into ResourceMate®.
ResourceMate®
Plus users can install ResourceMate®
onto one or more remote computers for the sole purpose
of using the remote copy's Import from Internet
feature to catalogue items (or for using the Plus version's
"Distributed Entry of Items" features). Then
those items can be merged into the main
computer database via floppy disk. The Regular version
does not have this merge capability.
If you find
other web sites, or CD-ROMs that allow the same
kind of searching and would like to automatically be able
to import that information into ResourceMate®, contact
Jaywil Software Development Inc. about these sources.
Have Fun!
