File, Items, Main


Category can be used to generally describe the item you are entering.  If you will be generating subject cards, or you need more than one categorization per item, you should use the Subjects screen.  Do not enter the Dewey decimal call number into the category field.


Category is reported in the Items by Category reports and can be searched using the Complex Search Screen.


As you enter the first few letters of the category, the field will be filled in.  You can also click on

to see the full list


To add a new category, simply type it in.  When you exit the field the new category will be added.


Delete a category

To delete a category, see the section, Change Utility under the Utilities Menu.


Note:

If you find that you are entering more than 50 or so categories, you should be using Subjects instead.   Think of categories as general (one per item) and subjects are more specific (one or more per item).


Press [TAB] when finished entering this information.

The description of this field can be changed by doing the following:

Regular - Utilities, Field Settings, Item - change the Default Label value

Plus - File, Resource Types, Detail, choose the resource type, General Fields, change the substitute label value


This information may be set to read only or invisible by doing the following

Regular - Utilities, Field Settings, Item - check ReadOnly or Invisible in the Field Settings column

Plus - File, Resource Types, Detail, choose the resource type, General Fields, check ReadOnly or Invisible in the Field Settings column


To make sure something gets entered in this field, do the following

Regular - Utilities, Field Settings, Item - check Required in the Field Settings column

Plus - File, Resource Types, Detail, choose the resource type, General Fields, check Required in the  Field Settings column


To set a default value whenever new items are added, do the following

Regular - Utilities, Field Settings, Item - enter a value in the Default value column

Plus - File, Resource Types, Detail, choose the resource type, General Fields, enter a value in the Default value column


To indicate whether this field is searchable by patrons, do the following

Regular or Plus - Utilities, Field Settings, Item - check the box in the "Patron Can Search" column


To indicate whether this field is available in a keyword search, do the following

Regular or Plus - Utilities, Field Settings, Item - check the box in the "Include in Keyword Search" column
